Endodontic Procedures

Operatory

Dr. Sullivan, Dr. Currie, Dr. McClure, and Dr. Popkowski are experienced in all endodontic procedures, performing thousands of endodontic procedures per year. The purpose of endodontic treatment is to allow you to save your natural tooth. The main endodontic procedures include: microscopic root canal therapy, microscopic endodontic retreatment, and microsurgical endodontics. All procedures are performed using a dental operating microscope to aid in visualization of the root canal anatomy. Depending on your specific case, the doctors will recommend the procedure that will offer you the best long term prognosis.

Root Canal Treatment

This is the most common endodontic treatment. The pulp tissue may become diseased from decay, a fracture, or trauma. When the pulp of the tooth has become diseased, the goal of the root canal treatment is to remove the diseased tissue from within the tooth. This is done with a chemomechanical preparation. Once the diseased tissue is removed, a root canal filling is placed to seal the inside of the tooth to maintain a healthy, disease-free tooth. A core buildup and crown are then placed in most cases.

Endodontic Retreatment

Endodontic retreatment is performed when a previous root canal treatment has become diseased. Retreatment involves the removal of an existing root canal filling with a goal to determine the cause for failure and correct the problem.

Microsurgical Endodontics (Apicoectomy)

Microsurgical endodontics is a surgical procedure that treats the end of the root. Sometimes this is referred to as an apicoectomy or apical surgery. The root apex is removed, allowing the chemomechanical treatment of the apical aspect of the root canal system. A filling is then placed in the end of the root. This procedure is often recommended if the cause of failure is isolated at the end of the root.

Cracked Teeth

Endodontic treatment is often needed due to the presence of a fracture in a tooth. If the fracture extends into the pulp, endodontic treatment is needed. If the fracture extends onto the root surface, below bone, then the tooth is not savable and would need to be extracted. Sometimes fractures will start at the apex of the tooth. Some of these teeth may be candidates for micro-surgical endodontic treatment.

Dental Trauma

Traumatic injuries such as fractured, cracked, or displaced teeth can result in the need for dental treatment. Dental trauma care requires prompt medical evaluation and treatment. Treatments may include a splint, medication, a root canal, or other procedures. Once treated, we will monitor your tooth to ensure it is healing properly and that any injuries or infections are quickly resolved.

CBCT and Endodontics

Utilizing 3D technology creates more detailed and higher-resolution images with less radiation exposure than a traditional full-mouth x-ray. This quick and painless technology helps our doctors recommend the most conservative treatment for a successful outcome and also help patients avoid costly exploratory procedures and possible unpredictable treatments.
